Saintly personalities have taught the principles of not rejecting something of this world as material, but suitably engage everything in the service of the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna for the upliftment of humanity. These principles underlie the Mayapur Airport Project, where modern technology, commerce and management practices converge for the execution of this mega endeavor in the service of God and mankind.

The purpose of the Mayapur Airport Project (MAP) is to provide speed, convenience and comfort for all visiting this sacred land, as well as providing humanitarian aid to the surrounding towns and villages that periodically fall victim to this flood-prone region. Encompassing the MAP is the master planed facilities – Airport, Medical Center, Hotel and Marina that serves as a vital component to the prosperous future of one of the world’s most spiritual landmarks.

Introduction – Spiritual Sky here on Earth
At present, the journey from Kolkata to Mayapur takes approximately 4 hours by car/taxi/bus.  Depending on the time of day and the seasons of the year, the road conditions can vary between bad to extreme.  This can make the journey very cumbersome for travelers not only from Kolkata but also from all other areas of the country and international travelers in particular.

Studies have shown that the corporate, affluent and middle class sections of the Indian society and especially NRI's abroad, is that their families and friends would make the pilgrimage to Sridham Mayapur in a heartbeat if an airport and facilities were there which would make it convenient and reachable year-around.  They would be able to visit Mayapur on their schedules and not necessarily for seasonal events or festivals.  Also, need I mention the devotees and tourists from around the world who are eager to take advantage of such air transportation and accommodations?

A Shining Becon of Light
In addition to building a Private Airport, establishing a Medical Center and a Luxury Hotel thru corporate development enterprises, the Mayapur Airport Project will add value to the local economy by attracting world-class businesses and people looking to invest in a growing yet sustainable community.  It should also be noted that the airport concept, illustrated on the public website, has not been designated as an actual site until the feasibility studies can reveal an appropriate location. The actual location will most likely be a greater distance away from the river systems and away from the Temples... In addition, the need to raise the land to an appropriate height above the flood plane will be very important, however.

Project Analysis & Modeling
We will conduct an indepth sutdy of how the airport in Tirupti (Temple City) was developed and how their facility currently operates. Utalizing six-sigma methodologies we will report on the challenges that were experienced during their development phases and the recommendations thereof.

Project Strategy – Establishing a Base of Operations
After several years of communications with H.H. Jayapataka Swami --Department Director of Iskcon Mayapur, and some consultation with H.H. Bhakti Charu Swami --Department Director of Iskcon Mayapur, they have sanctioned the Mayapur Airport Project, and have given their blessings and upmost support within their authority. They have assigned capable devotees to collaborate with the MAP team and allocate any available resources and facilities that will contribute towards the success of the project.

Within the past few years some research has been carried out in this regard (see the bottom section of this document –Deccan Air Service quote), which will give an indication of the requirements of an air transportation corridor.  Investment opportunities and the need to develop planned infrastructures in the Mayapur spectrum is now!

For the immediate goal of establishing a base of operations, we plan to construct a small airstrip under 2,000 ft. in Mayapur (suitable land) or in the nearby vicinity.  The airfield/heliport does not have to be in a permanent location, just so long as it has permission to operate in that regional airspace.  We have checked with the Civil Aviation Ministry in New Delhi and the Commercial Airport Authority in Kolkata who will grant the certifications required for an air transportation route.  The data indicates that the Nadia district of Mayapur clears the range of vector-border-boundaries between Bangladesh and West Bengal and the landing approaches of Kolkata Intl.  This is an excellent arrangement to have in place while the feasibility reports and R&D for the full-scale MAP are being conducted.  At this point, we will have established a foothold that will make promoting the expansion projects more attractive to investors, donors, contractors, architects, engineers, vendors, and industry affiliates.

A Global Initiative Program
Now it is obvious that a multimillion dollar project of this kind will take a few years to complete. So a more detailed summary of these figures and a detailed project analysis will be forthcoming as a comprehensive multimedia presentation, as soon as the startup funds or even a portion of the funds are secured. Please note that these startup costs may be granted as philanthropic.

All Glorious to Your Devotional Service
Thank you for reviewing this proposal Radhanath Maharaj. I am ardently seeking your guidance and advice with regards to the procurement of the startup funds. Any effort on your part will dramatically help the vision of establishing an airport to the Holy Dhama--become a reality!

Biographical Data and Notable Achievements of -- Rasa Parayana Das

Srila Prabhupadada - JPS

ISKCON India:  Throughout a 7 to 8 year period of service in India, some of the most notable projects and assignments that I took part in were:

  • The Mayapur Main Entry Gate, where Jayapataka Swami and Surabi Swami sought my opinion of the architectural design of the sample variations of the Main Entry Gate domes.  I chose the dome designs that are there at present, and then JPS assigned me to supervise the construction of the entry gate and the adjoining walls (the Gurukula class rooms, the children’s ashrams and the first cutti shops  (fabric handlooms)) for which I procured the machines from a nearby village…
  • The Prasadam Pavilion, where Jayapataka Swami and I commissioned a manufacturing company in Calcutta and I organized the procurement of the cement, the steel, the fabrication of the pedestrian turn-style gates and all of the essential construction supplies.  I supervised the full completion phases of the construction.

  • The Mayapur Agriculture Development Scheme, where I constructed the first windmill unit in the goshala.
  • The Gobor-gas Fuel Tanks Project that were installed next to the Lotus building that used a mixture of cow dung, water & solar heat, stored in two – 10 x 10 ft. cement holding tanks –half buried in the ground which supplied natural gas for cooking in the deity kitchen.  I assisted JPS on the design, commission and procurement of the large sheet metal domes that were fabricated at the Don Bosco mission workshop in Krishnanagar.
  • Head of Transportation in Mayapur –  For several years during the early days in Mayapur I was the single primary driver for the entire compound, before there was a motor pool.  I had the greatest honor and privilege to chauffer Srila Prabhupada and his family members in Calcutta and Mayapur.  Some of Srila Prabhupada’s family and close family friends embraced me as --that young boy (brahmachari) from the West.

My driving expeditions ranged from the south, Puri, Orissa and the Bay of Bengal and up to the north, Manipur & Gauhati in Assam.  A good portion of that time was in the company of H.H. Jayapataka Swami. The adventures that I experienced would fill a novel… In fact, JPS and several others have recommended that I should write my memories of those days when we were young fellows in our 20’s…
  • West Bengal and The Great Flood of ’78 – The rescue and flood relief efforts that I took part in was an event that is hard to describe yet most memorable in my minds eye.  The deluge of the monsoon rains forced a hydroelectric dam in the northern part of the State to release its sleuth-gates (an emergency protection system), which flooded over 1,000 square kilometers of low lands.  I piloted a 12 ft. motor launch that was hoisted onto a lorry with relief supplies and driven up by road from Calcutta via Bangladesh passage.  The closest that we could come to Mayapur was Krishnanagar (35 km away) then we had to navigate the heavily flooded waters and treacherous currents to reach Mayapur.  For several weeks we distributed relief supplies and kitchry prasadam to the flood victims and the many stranded villages within a 50-kilometer radius of the Mayapur Mandir.

  • At the Hyderabad Temple – I performed service with Mahamsa and Achutananda prabhus.  I supervised the initial temple construction and superstructure of the site.  During long periods of construction slowdowns I took the opportunity to consult with the building contractor who was also working on the Birla Mandir at that time.  I learned from Mr. Reddy, about the many building techniques for temples and structures of that caliber, particularly temple construction in an urban environment.  I published several newsletters for the ISKCON Hyderabad area.  I traveled extensively with Achutananda prabhu and devotees and organized some of the pandal programs in Bangalore, Madras and several smaller towns in south India.

At the Hare Krishna Land Complex in Juhu – Mumbai, I worked at the Bhakti Kala Kshetra Theater and Auditorium as a stage manager.  My job was constructing and setting up the backdrops and arrangement of the lighting & sound systems thru macro processors, staging the concerts & plays and operating the theater projectors.  I worked under the supervision of Jagat Purusa and Ratha Grahi prabhus. This service was one of the most educational and technical fulfilling experiences that I had since joining Iskcon.  I studied and worked with electrical engineering modules where Ratha Grahi and I installed & centrally controlled the PA systems throughout the entire complex.  The audio system included the main temple area, the pujari quarters and its adjacent ashrams, the twin tower hotel rooms and lobbies, the restaurant and kitchens.  The sophisticated piped-in audio system featured multi-channel selections with music and live broadcasts of the main temple and other special events happening around temple complex.
